Protecting Confidential Journalistic Sources in Israel
Can Israel Strike a Better Balance Between National Security and Freedom of the Press?
Monday, May 20, 2013, 5:00pm-8:00pm, Israel Democracy Institute, Pinsker 4, Jerusalem, Israel – In light of recent decisions by the Israeli Supreme Court regarding media censorship, the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), together with Hatzlaha, will host a roundtable discussion on Confidentiality of Journalistic Sources in Israel to examine the state of reporters' privilege in Israel.
Should legislators create a legal framework to protect confidentiality of sources? What is the proper balance between journalists' need to report the news and their responsibility to society? How does the advent of the digital age affect these considerations?
Join journalists, academics, and other thought leaders to discuss the delicate balance between security and freedom of the press. Speakers include:
- Justice Dalia Dorner, former Israeli Supreme Court Justice and President of the Israeli Press Council
- Dr. Ilana Dayan, Host of Uvda, Channel 2
- Hanoch Marmari, Editor-in-Chief, Seventh Eye
- Amir Oren, Senior Correspondent, Haaretz
The roundtable will be held in Hebrew though English interviews may be scheduled upon request. For additional background information, see a recently released IDI working paper (in Hebrew) on statutory regulation of journalistic privilege.
