IDI's International Advisory Council Convenes for Eighth Meeting

IDI's International Advisory Council met on April 12-14, 2019 for its eighth meeting since its inception in 2009. Council members joined a number of distinguished guests for three days of intensive seminars and sessions at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City.



The sessions focused on the state of democracy around the world and the particular challenges facing Israel. Among the topics discussed were the results of the elections in Israel, strategies for confronting populism, the challenge of integrating Israel's Arab and ultra-Orthodox communities into Israeli society and the economy, and the dilemmas facing the IDF as it grapples with its traditional role as the 'people's army.'

Guests at a rooftop dinner event held at Rockefeller Center included Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon, Israeli Consul General to New York Ambassador Dani Dayan, former IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan, Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus, philanthropists Alex and Irina Knaster, former Governor of the Bank of Israel Karnit Flug, Chairman of the Conference of Presidents Arthur Stark, Chairman of the Genesis Prize Foundation Stan Polovets, former Chairman of Guardian Industries Ralph Gerson, and many others.

Participating members of the Council included Stanford University President Emeritus Gerhard Casper, Canadian Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella, journalist and author Anne Applebaum, Kings College Professor Vernon Bogdanor, former Canadian Minister of Justice Irwin Cotler, Johns Hopkins University President Ronald Daniels, philosopher Professor Moshe Halbertal, Council on Foreign Relations distinguished fellow Martin Indyk, Die Ziet editorial council member Dr. Josef Joffe, former Israeli Justice Salim Joubran, Harvard Law Professor Robert Mnookin, former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gabriela Shalev, Judge Abraham Sofaer, New York Times columnist Bret Stephens and Princeton Professor Michael Walzer.
