Dr. Jonathan Bezalel

Dr. Jonathan Bezalel is a Senior Researcher at the Israel Democracy Institute and an economist specializing in public policy, behavioral economics, and decision-making under uncertainty. At the Institute, his work focuses on the cost of living, the state budget, and economic policy.

Before joining the Institute, he spent more than two decades in a range of professional and managerial positions in the public sector. Most recently, he served as Deputy Director General for Infrastructure Coordination and Budgeting at the Infrastructure Administration of the Ministry of Transport. In this role, he was responsible for planning, budgeting, and advancing national road and rail infrastructure projects.

From 2022 to 2025, he held senior positions at the Ministry of Economy and Industry in the areas of budgeting and price control. Before that, he spent about 12 years in the Accountant General's Department at the Ministry of Finance, where his roles included accounting, budgeting, and financial management. Over the course of his career, he also served as CFO of the Government Tourism Corporation and worked as an economist and analyst at Intel.

Dr. Bezalel is a faculty member at Ono Academic College, where he teaches economics and finance.

He holds a BA in Economics and Business Administration with honors and an MBA with a specialization in finance from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also holds a PhD in Management and Economics from the University of Leicester in England.

His academic research focuses on behavioral economics and behavioral finance, with an emphasis on motivation, incentives, and economic decision-making under uncertainty.
