The ICJ Hearings on Israel and the War on Hamas

On December 29th, 2023 South Africa instigated proceedings in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging that Israel has violated the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. On January 11th, the Court began by hearing South Africa’s oral argument, after which Israel presented its counter argument on January 12th. On January 26th, the Court will deliver its Order. What does the international law state and what are the possible implications of these proceedings on the ongoing war and Israel’s international standing?
