There is no such thing as media that is too free!

In recent days, a firestorm has erupted over the Prime Minister's initiative to shut down Israel's new Public Broadcasting Corporation, founded after many years of planning as a substitute for the old Broadcasting Authority. In response, IDI hosted an emergency debate with media leaders, Knesset members and other senior decision makers.

Partial List of Participants:

  • MK Yoav Kisch (Likud)
  • MK Eitan Cabel (Zionist Union)
  • MK Roy Folkman (Kulanu)
  • MK Karin Elharar (Yesh Atid)
  • Justice Dalia Dorner
  • IDI President Yohanan Plesner
  • Senior Journalist Ben Caspit
  • Senior Journalist Ya'akov Ahimeir

Background:

In response to statements made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicating that the new Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC) would not become operational, and comments by Coalition Chairman David Bitan that he was working to eliminate the IPBC, IDI scholars drafted and disseminated a policy statement and convened a roundtable discussion.

A full release with details about the policy paper and quotes by IDI President Yohanan Plesner and Director of the Center for Democratic Values and Institutions Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler can be found here.
