Hadash

Founded in 1977

One of the veteran political parties in Israel, Hadash has run in every Knesset elections since 1977. Established before the elections for the Ninth Knesset, Hadash was formed as a merger between Rakah and other movements, such as the Black Panthers, that chose to join the new party. Located on the far left of the political map, Hadash had a distinct communist orientation and was among the first parties in Israel to champion the idea of two states for two peoples (i.e., supporting a Palestinian state,) as a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The party emphasizes the need for Israel to return all of the occupied territories, including the Golan Heights, and demands a just solution to the problem of Palestinian refugees. The party also calls for equality between Arab and Jewish citizens of the State of Israel and strives for social justice and socialism.

Hadash is a mixed Arab-Jewish list. This finds expression in the fact that its Knesset list and its voting public are made up of both Arabs and Jews. In the past decade, however, most of the party's support has been from the Arab public. In the elections for the 14th Knesset in 1996, Hadash ran on a joint list with Balad, while in the elections for the 16th Knesset in 2003 it ran on a joint list with Ta'al. In the 2015 elections it was one of the four parties that made up the Joint List.
